What Happened Tonight? Poem by Richard D Remler

What Happened Tonight?

Rating: 5.0

.........

I will tell you quite plainly
What happened, you see.
For I know everything
That was given to me.
I know it is true, and
I know it is right,
My story of all
That has happened tonight.

Now don't get me wrong,
For I wasn't there.
But I have on good conscience
The when and the where.
It was all told to me
By my good pal, Old Jed.
And it came right from the source,
For he heard it from Fred.

And Fred, as you know,
You can trust, trust, trust, trust.
For he learned it from Melvin,
Who heard it from Gus.
And Gus, he's such a good friend
That I'd never doubt
He knew everything
He was talking about.

Then Gus spoke with Milford,
Who then talked with Jane,
And she spoke with the old man
Who lives down the Lane.
The old man, I don't know him,
Because we've never met.
But I'm certain he knows
What went on there, I'll bet.

He then talked to Arthur,
Who relayed it to Gil,
Who was sure of his story
When he told it to Bill.
And Bill spoke with Audrey,
Who shared it with Del,
Who double checked first
Before she discussed it with Nell.

But Nell's kind of crazy
In a crazy Nell way,
So I really can't vouch
For what Nell had to say
When she told it to
Clifford and Verne at the store
As they tried to escape
When she came in the door.

Then Verne spoke with
The old lady who lives by the Park
And stares out of her windows
Til way after dark.
And she told it to Wilbur,
Who then told it to Raul,
Who left nothing out
When he shared it with Paul.

Then Paul talked to Henry,
Who then talked to John,
Who could have cared less
About passing it on.
But he mentioned it briefly
To Albert and Phil,
And Charles, and Edna,
Robert, and Will.

And, of course, you know Will.
He was fit to be tied
For Will, as you know,
Always looks on the bright side.
Yet he clicked at his tongue
As he tried to convey
The information to Meg
That he wanted to say.

And Meg jotted down notes,
Scribbled them all on a pad,
Like a crazy bag lady
Who'd gone recently mad.
And Meg, as you know,
She can write, write write, write.
And probably did
All that went on tonight.

So I will tell you quite plainly
The truth that I've heard.
I will leave nothing out.
No, not even a word.
The why and the how
And the where and the who...
But just where should I start?
For I haven't a clue.

A large game of Chinese whispers, brilliantly written Richard.
