What Am I Poem by Justin Tanabe

What Am I

My skin color is irrelevant
And so is my caste.
My capacity to love has no bounds
Unless I choose to cut off
the wings of my heart

Cut me and I will bleed
Tell me a funny joke
And I will laugh
Sing to me a beautiful song
And I will cry
Give me sunshine
And I will bloom.

Sometimes I am joyful
Sometimes I am filled with sorrow.
Sometimes I am deathly afraid
Sometimes I am courageous
Sometimes I am a coward.

So I ask again
What am I?

Answer: A human being just like you.
