We Were Given Little Cakes

we were given little cakes and apples

and told to be good and later there would be more

the feasting went on in the castle for days.

we had song sparrows to play with.

chinks of light through the kitchen door.

we didn't know we were ignored.

silver and china and finely worked damask

we saw going out on the trollies to the guests.

And the fleur di lis plates piled high oh everything, the best.

We made shadow puppets on the walls.

And comforted those who started to cry.

At night we dreamed the King of Heaven came down

and made us shifts of gold
