We Buried The Dog Poem by Seamus O' Brian

We Buried The Dog

Rating: 5.0

We buried the dog
at the base of the pine
recently toppled by a hurricane.

I remember her warm and floppy
in my arms at first, a wreath
of sobbing children afraid
to touch her, afraid to touch
death.We lit our candles

and buried her beneath
a tree I thought would
outlast me.How wrong
I am on so many counts.

But I do know enough
to cover the stiffness
of a beloved friend
in an old blanket; to hide it
from those to whom
life is still something
warm and comfortable.

I still hear children
chasing laughter around the trees
in the yard, still chasing
the morning end of time.

But the carpenter ants
are devouring the tree
from the inside out
and the worms, I suppose,
have taken care of the dog.

I've braced against a hurricane or two
and I still stand,
maybe not as straight;
the bark is a bit tattered;
the sap has hardened
and time is taking care
of me, too.

All i ask for is a wreath
of love and laughter
and for you to remember
that life is death,
and death is life.

We humans are a brave and noble lot. We get ourselves pets. Nobody forces us. We WANT to suffer. And suffer we will when one after another they die after living such short lives, leaving us with great big holes in our hearts so we go get ourselves another pet so we can have more pain and holes... Beautifully expressed. Now I will mourn the tree we bury them under. 10++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

True, Susan, true- though I have not thought about in the sense of intentional suffering. Strangely true, that love cannot be separated from pain. Very insightful, Susan. Thanks, as always! :)

Yes, I buried Mr P in a red blanket. The violas are still in flower, a hundred or so, and they look on to mr P's grave. Maybe they are his guardians. It's a very sad time and you have expressed your feelings so well in a beautiful poem. He will always live in your memory. He looks a very sweet doggie,

An extremely heartfelt and moving work, I don't know how much pain I will feel when the time comes for my own dog. The picture is even more sobering. A great work.
