Walking The Long Walk Poem by Dorsey Baker

Walking The Long Walk

Rating: 5.0

A hungry baby
sucks from the breast
another child
holds tightly
to her hand as she walks
the long and rocky road
her destination
is freedom!
determination
and courage
they walk with her
as she is walking
the long walk!
her clothes are old
and worn
no shoes upon her feet
she is barefooted
and her children too
she is a mother
trying to get
herself
and her children
out of the danger zone!
she'll be glad
when she can cross
the finish line
she is trying so hard
to reach her destination
and freedom
is her destination! ! !

Although you didn't specifically mention it, this sounds like the Caravan, Dorsey. I hope she doesn't turn out to be one of those who, in utter exhaustion, calls for a bus to take her back home.
