'In 1972, just one month after winning his first Senate race, Biden received a phone call telling him his wife and college sweetheart Neilia and their 13-month-old daughter Naomi had been killed in a car accident on their way to buy a Christmas tree.'

For many years after that extraordinary tragedy, Senator Biden commuted daily on the train to his Delaware home and his 2 sons, a 4 hour roundtrip commute.

Last week his son, the former attorney general of Delaware, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer after a long fight.
