Under A Tree Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Under A Tree

He sits silently under a tree,
Not waiting
Not meditating
Not anticipating
Just listening

Eyes closed
Shoulders relaxed
Index fingers and thumbs touching
Totally at rest within himself.

He hears her approach
Knows her by her energy
Patiently waits
For her to mirror him

Not a touch
Not a word
Not a nod
Not an “ohm”

But still it begins
His yin rises like a vine
Her yang clings to it
And blooms like a night orchid
Sending out her scent
To fill the courtyard.

A peace descends
The insects gather
The birds roost in the trees above
And all watch as two figures
Are subsumed in the whole they become
When they give themselves up
To each other.
