Turning Around Poem by Saiom Shriver

Turning Around

Retrain
the brain
to expand, not contract
in response to pain.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Note: Once in the throes of pain
I was reminded by a voice
in my head 'Expand in response
to pain'. This sentence from
Thaddeus Golas in Lazy Man's
Guide To Enlightenment was
about our natural brain wiring
to contract in such situations.
He said in effect we should
retrain our brain.
I obeyed the voice.

Since we materialize
what we think
it is important to
visualize the positive
and to practice seeing everyone
we meet as an incarnation of
God.

It is said that lifting
the muscles of the face
in an untrue smile
improves our mood
