Toughen Up Poem by Ellen Shaw

Toughen Up

Toughen up
polish your boots
iron in creases
in your trouser suit
paint your face
draw on a smile
pretend
for just a little while
toughen up
practice your lines
life is perfect
better than fine
brace yourself
face the world head on
be in the moment
until you are gone
toughen up
stop listening
stop seeing
stop feeling
stop being
