To Dream Of Nietzsche Poem by Robert Combs

To Dream Of Nietzsche

Rating: 2.0

awake
day 13
alone in the cold calm
of the purple desert
each step I take
is an argument
between my body and my soul

have you ever
seen an angel
“yes”
I held her
in my arms last night
while we danced
around a jeweled fire

and the old man
walking beside me
seems to grow younger
with every step taken
talking of mysteries and men

have you ever
talked to God
“no”
but I He was
in my daughter's nursery last night
dancing around her crib
softly singing lullabies

death opens
her heavy arms
and the muddy red river
drags me thru darkness
across sunken breakwater barriers
shredding my clothes
with silver sand

have you ever
seen the devil
“yes”
he walked beside me
for awhile today
eating bread and
drinking wine
making promises
he can never keep

here and now
I am reborn
in the sure knowledge
that man must make
his own choices
beyond the gates
of good and evil
