To Be Simply Pretty Poem by Averie Richardson

To Be Simply Pretty

Plucking my fingernails off one by one
Hearing the pathetic tapping noise as they hit the ground

Tearing my hair out strand by strand
Feeling the spots I missed

Clawing at my skin
Seeing what it's doing for my complexion

I mutilate my body for beauty
I'd kill myself if that meant I could be pretty
