Sufi poets use wine as the symbol of both divine grace and poetic inspiration; the first makes them more humane,
the second more creative. Taoist poets claimed poetry and wine equaled the Endless Life. One wrote: I will straggle down this road until I have danced into some paradise! And Shakespeare's Sir John Falstaff affirms wine because it makes him not only witty in himself but the cause of wit in other men. And your poem joins this company of faith in inspiration. The second line says it all: drunk on words we write.... Amen to that! or I'll drink to that! (I love this poem!)
I love and appreciate your comment and the art of writing poetry. Your comment was very informative and I appreciate it deeply.
There was a period in Jakarta Indonesia when I sometimes wrote while drinking alcohol for a few months, there were times before this when I woke with the first lines of poems or dreamed poems; both experiences would take several paragraphs to define. Now I never write and drink alcohol at the same time or before writing, although I drink coffee in the morning before writing. Changes :)
