This Place, Is My Home... Poem by Kondwani Simwaba

This Place, Is My Home...

This place, is my home…
I know of a place where heroes came to rest;
A place blessed with endless but exploited natural resources,
I know of a place filled with a great many mineral resources;
A place best described as a natural treasure chest.
I was born in this place,
My father's father was born in this place,
Born and bred, heck my forefathers died in this place.
I know of a place where unsung heroes died fighting;
A place for which liberation was fought,
I know of a place whose freedom was all ever sought;
A place whose glow has hitherto never stopped igniting.
I was born in this place,
My mother's mother gave birth in this place,
Born and bred, heck an entire village was born from this place.
I know of a place that was subjected to nothing but terror;
A place to which many fled in the name of amelioration,
I know of a place whose saviors stood for nothing but alienation;
A place whose natural culture was considered nothing but an error.
I was born in this place,
Heroes and villains were also born in this place,
Born and bred, heck an entire nation was built from this place.
I know of a place that is daily killed by its very own;
A place that dies from inside out,
I know of a place whose own people kill it through and throughout;
A place from which impending collapse remains imminently prone,
Sadly! This place, is my home too…
