The What If Wall Poem by Bill Dureen

The What If Wall

The 'what if' wall is too high
Too high and impenetrable
No ladder can reach over
No wrecking ball can break through
Digging beneath is impossible
Yet, it's invisible
Too many invisible bricks in the 'what if' wall
The what if the car breaks down brick
The what if the heart gives out brick
It's safer behind the wall, more comfortable.
Thankfully, TV is behind the wall
Making it easy to visit the 'Last Resort'
To experience a 'Revolution'
To spin the 'Wheel'
To put yourself in a quizzical 'Jeopardy'
Escapism becomes 'Elementary'
If there's a gate in the 'what if' wall,
It's a locked gate with an invisible key
There's no way around the 'what if' wall
The time has come to admit, and accept,
The 'what if' wall is insurmountable.
