The Teenage Blues Poem by Richard Wlodarski

The Teenage Blues

Rating: 5.0

One day I saw you
Looking sad and blue
I wanted to talk
You went for a walk
All I wanted to say
Is that you're in dismay
About the blow life has dealt you
And you sit feeling bitter blue

I don't wanna sound like your mom and dad
Because I know it will make you more sad
It's going to take awhile
For you to get back that smile
'cause I know what's making you hurt so bad
And it's making me feel so damn sad
You see I've sure been there
In that place called Nowhere
And now I can say for certain
It seemed like the final curtain
But in those quiet moments of desperation
Also came some great moments of inspiration

I tried very hard not to give up hope
And found it hard staying away from dope
I learned then that life was not easy
Nobody said it would be rosy
I learned to roll with the punches
And found that things came in bunches
Sometimes there would be moments of pure ecstasy
And then, unexpectedly, times of misery
I guess what I'm trying to say
Is that things being as they may
Everything will turn out for you
And you will stop feeling that blue

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Lisa was a client of mine when I had worked as a counselor in a government sponsored program. Just as progress was being made with these troubled teens, the government pulled the plug on this program. They felt totally dejected. They kept repeating: they always do this to us. What's the point in trying?

Yoir Kerouac poems are short and compressed - there's a KNOT of energy the finished poem displays tom the reader: We are ready to undertake a mission; that knot of energy is ours to use up. This story generates none; it is draining. The real world disappointment shows how impoirtant a figure like Kerouac is

Daniel, both the clients and the counselors were draining. Thank you so much for your astute observation about the Kerouac poems and the man himself!

Lovely poem Richard. Well begun is half done. You tried your best at the job.

Much of what you said in your poem, I have said to my own daughter. You must have been a good counselor in addition to being a good poet.
