The Peanut Poem Poem by Sheena Blackhall

The Peanut Poem

George Carver he was born a slave
In the Deep South, when freed
He made it as a scientist
A man born to succeed

He knew his peanuts inside out:
Here's uses that he found:
Soups and soaps and candy
Peanuts smooth and ground

Coatings for sweet potatoes
Coffee and milk for cooking
Mock fried chicken, bran and meal
Feed to keep hens laying

Oil, hay, dyes and colourants
Wood stains, paper too
Medicines, face creams, fibre,
Axle grease, and glue

Paint and ink. Insecticides.
He pulled out all the stops
Flour, paste, insulation,
Shaving cream and crops

Antiseptics, laxatives
A treatment for a goiter
Mayonnaise and Worcestershire Sauce
Chop Suey Sauce, Mock Oyster
Mock Goose, Mock Duck, Mock Chicken
Mock Veal, Curds, vinegar
Peanut Sausage, Chocolate Fudge
Caramel, Washing Powder

Tutti Frutti, Butterscotch,
Lard Compound, Cheese Nut Sage
Sweet Pickle, Golden Nuts, Cheese Cream
And peanut beverage

Substitute Asparagus
Laxatives and Cosmetics
Cheese Pimento, peanut punch
Wood Filler, Polish, Plastics

Pickle, plain and cocoa
Evaporated Milk
Peanut Wafers, rubbing oil
Shampoos smooth as silk

Iron tonic, tannic acid
Bleach and tan remover
Emulsion for bronchitis
And soil conditioner

Shoe and leather blacking
Mock castor and quinine
A VD cure emollient
Fuel bricketts, gasoline

Oil for hair and oil for scalp
Baby Massage Cream
Dandruff cure and toilet soap
Gas and glycerine

Printers Ink and rubber
Diesel fuel too on the scene
Linoleum and wall boards
Nitroglycerine

Lovely poem. A useful lesson in history but most importantly the world advancea faster when people are allowed to contribute regardless of race. Please read my " bunk boo play truant" ...its lamenting the distortion of history based on race. Thanks for sharing.
