The Old Gods Poem by Chibueze Oscar Osuji

The Old Gods

The old gods fell-inclining boom
Down with the loudest sound;
End of era-defining doom,
Split pieces on the ground.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

Gone are their frail altars and shrine
Yesterday they once stood,
Good today we merry with wine
The old gods were no good.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

Throng of people gather again
From length and width they came,
On the old gods they heap'd their pain,
The old gods drubb'd the same.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

Old gods, who captur'd all our faiths
Tied as the gordian knot;
They're eccentric to us as wraiths.
To be slaves, we must not.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

No more head shall be pull away
From an innocent's neck,
Nor shall we 'pease the gods to pray;
All lips shall sing on deck.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

Oh! Their glory won't be uphold
For they all do have none;
Their rot particles won't unfold,
We'll smoke them by the sun.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

Why did we bow in submission?
Observing eyes they lack
They can not see any vision
Immobile as plant's bark.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

All our time those old gods had tak'n
The clock tick against us
All our great years we've forsaken
Those gods: Our painful source.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

When the sun wakes, man must be kill'd
Moon comes we do likewise;
The mouths of those weak gods were fill'd,
Kindle! 'Gainst their advice.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

Gather propane and lynch the shrine
Cut down their sacred shrubs
For none of them is worth divine,
We'll smack them down with clubs.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

''Old gods fell'' still hearing those chants
Gossip'd around the place
By sires and trading merchants
Permute in many ways.
Verily, verily, they fell
Merrily, merrily, we tell.

We seek for a new God as much-
-As our vacuum hearts bleed
We seek for the supreme God: Such-
-God grants ev'ryone's need.

Surely we seek
A God that's peak
A God who's meek
Old gods were weak.

Our clan will surely pledge to the mosthigh
Perilous time is here, last days are nigh.

Throw those immobile gods away
Throw them o'er the valley
And thus do what the preacher say,
Love the real God, dearly.
Cruelly, cruelly, the sins we've done
Truly, truly, mercy forgone.
