The Mullahs Poem by Daniel Brick

The Mullahs

Rating: 5.0

Pious and proud in their prayer arches and pulpits,
in private they make love to their idols.

They set traps in their homes to stop the passage of angels.
They prepare long lists of people who must do penance.

Daniel, we all know your poems can win the beloved's heart.
Enough! Write a simple poem today that will change hearts!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is the second of my five Sufi-inflected poems. It focuses on the Mullahs, religious authorities who monitored compliance with the Law.
The tension between a Sufi and the Mullahs is roughly analogous of the tension between Jesus and the Pharisees. It is the endless conflict between the free spirit and the legalistic spirit. It is not a question of which side is right. For the individual the issue is - which side will lead me to redemption, fulfillment, ______ (fill in the blank with your term) .

I have always been inclined to Sufism as it caters to the spiritual needs of the people. You have beautifully summed up the difference between the two- -spiritual n dogmatic in the last two lines. It's up to individual discretion to choose....winning hearts or changing hearts.

Hi Daniel, As we both feel withn us dogma and inflexibity leaves little room for creative self-involvement. I truly secretly pray for the stiff-minded that they do not feel threatened by the beliefs of others. The variety of Nature reflects our bounteous world of thinking beings. Let all express their own spirituality and let us not be reliant on a few paths to redemption. Learn and live and read and think! Meditation can open up the floodgates of the muses. This wonderful verse gives one the clear beckoning of the free spirit. Greetings, Paul
