The Last Glance! Poem by Avik Datta Gupta

The Last Glance!

The woman lay naked on the footpath,
Her dirty hair and clothes were torn.
She shivered and smiled at the winter morning,
As her time had come to be reborn.

No need now to be hungry and meek!
No begging, in fact no need to speak!
The time has come with a tear in her eye,
To bid the cruel world, her final goodbye!

Her surroundings were soiled with excreted blood!
Her eyes were blank and still,
As she breathed with whatever strength she had,
Until it stopped with her life's lost will.

Petrified people looked on as she died,
A bit late to do anything at all!
So many days she may've starved and cried,
With no one to care at all.

A broken heart and a shattered life,
Abundant with miseries and helpless woes,
And why would she have to die this way?
Only her relieved soul would know!

If you live on heaven on this fair earth
There are people dying within it's hell!
Like this young woman who lost her life,
Without a single happy story to tell.

Soon the municipality van did come,
And picked up her mortal remains,
As she looked at her body that was going to be
A fresh corpse for the medical students!

Washed and disinfected on a dissecting table,
She took a last glance, before she couldn't!
At least the students would learn a bit from it!
While the rest of the world wouldn't!
