The Hunter & Her Prey Poem by Ashley Fortin

The Hunter & Her Prey

I can smell your sweet intoxicating scent,
It threatens to swallow me into uncontrollable instinct,
But I keep to the stillness to preserve my invisibility.
My eyes lock to your neck then your entire body,
To your delicious scent that seems to flow through you,
My eyes adjust to incline my view towards you; my prey.

You seem not to notice the change of atmosphere between the trees,
As I slink forward through the tall grass the encircles us both,
I lower myself to the ground as my body crawls across the forest floor.
Sweat begins to roll from my forehead as I sense the coming victory,
You only pay attention to the scenery around us,
Your mind is else where as the company of others seem to browse.

A wind blows from the opposite of you revealing my presence,
Yet only as you slightly begin to turn your attention to my scent,
Like a falcons' swift encircling dive to its prey, I attack.

I rap my arms around your neck throwing us both; prey and predator,
Into the tall dark grass and moss covered forest floor with a grace,
I lie half across you my face inches from yours.
I see the shock and feel the accelerated heart beat,
Then slowly, a beautiful smile appears across your face,
As your arms encircle us together I rest my head on your chest.
My long black hair falling to intertwine with your blonde mess of hair,
Your heart settles back and you roll on your side,
Moving me to rest my head upon your shoulder at your side.
The cool forest floor comforts us and eases the pain of rocks and dirt,
The trees breath with us and cool the air,
The birds play a tune of no other that relaxes and wonders the mind.

As I look to my right I see your beautiful face,
And as though I call you, your face turns to mine,
Your blue eyes match mine in harmony as we intertwine our hands.
I curl myself into you as our lips met with a light touch,
Then with a force of energy they begin to move in perfect tune,
As we open our eyes I look up to the sky through the covering canopy.
The sky has darkened to a navy blue and the stars begin to move in,
The moon is full and the trees sway in the swift breeze,
I in hail the forests scent, but instead, am intoxicated by yours.

The sky begins to become black and darkness now ensnarls us,
I close my eyes as I feel your soft stare upon my face,
I let the darkness fall upon us and I think of you and one other thought;
I have my entire life purpose right here with me,
And I have never loved anything more than you,
Never have I ever felt this strong of a need to live for one person.

Then I wonder what it would be like to loose you?
I shudder and you tighten your grip around my body,
I forget the thought for fear of sadness...
At this moment just us, I want nothing to change,
Although I know completely that I am thinking the impossible...

I let my thoughts slip away quickly,
And turn to you once again as you gaze up at the stars and moon,
I join your gaze and slip into the night with the rest of the world,
With you beside me...
