The Dog And Pony Show Poem by Rachael Swiss

The Dog And Pony Show

Ballerina in a music box
Red smile painted on,
I twirl for you till the music stops
And frown when you are gone.

Allow me to do a pirouette
Tu-tu, satin tulle,
Spinning like a marionette
Whenever you're available.

I have my little circus act
Where I strut my stuff upon the stage,
I can and do wear many hats
Tightly fettered to my cage.

Love is a dog and pony show,
Smoke and mirrors well up the eyes;
But funhouse distortions cut you know
And circus pups prance 'round a ring of lies.

But watch me do my dance for you -
I will muster up all my grace
And sweetly turn about this room
Tears falling from my face.

In pointy shoes and pink coquette
I'll let you watch me fall
Four stories without a safety net
With you applauding through it all.
