The Day Will Come Poem by J. James Martinez

The Day Will Come

The day will come
When you call my name
When you reach out
Hoping to feel
Me
Longing for me to hold you close
With my arms and collar bone
But
I will not be there
Nor will I care
I’ve given you the chance
To secure your shoulder
You’ve looked above and beyond
Toward another
So live
With your other
Let him hug
And smother
Let him give you the adoration
Allow him to scribble onto
Page after page
After page
Have him crown you
With the paper tiara
I’ve patched and clipped and glued
Together for you
Let him laugh and cherish
And give forth the efforts towards loving the most
Minuscule details of your ways
Let him turn his eyes

Away
As if non-existent
The wrongs and annoyances
Imperfections and nuances
Which you claim as your own

Let him
Bathe you in the blind love
That I do

That one-day will come
And
Maybe I’ll run
Maybe we’ll drive into the sun
Or
Maybe
We’ll be long removed
And done
