The Candlelight Poem by Divine Idiong

The Candlelight

Follow me inside Safarawu.
Even though I know little of the north.
Let us shut out the many eyes scrutiny.
Let us shut them out again tonight.
Those lights that search our bodies
For the lines between you and me,
Determined to light up our differences.

From inside the secret of our bedroom,
The flickering candlelight of love
Throws two dancing photographs on the wall.
Naked and colourless like Adam and Hauwawu
Dancing to an unheard rhythm on the wall
Near our matrimonial bed.

And the candlelight flickers on
And the images on the wall dance on
In a harmony that merges us together forever.

One night we will carry their eyes
In here to see this colourless conjugation
Of our spirits as man and wife.
To find out the dull angles
Of our religious marks.
