The Abortion Poem by Cameron Gallant

The Abortion

Mommy cried.
She said the baby died.
But when I asked why,
She said ‘I’ll tell you in time’.

‘Don’t you worry your pretty little head.
Just say a prayer for Daddy as you go to bed.’
And when I asked what should I say,
Mommy said just, ‘let Daddy see the light someday’.

The light someday
The life some day
Where everything melts away
The things he dreams to do and bills to pay
If only he would have stopped telling her, her package was a mistake
Shooting furtive glances that bombard her brain with pain.

And if she could stop feeling guilt for disrupting their life
When they live on borrowed money, below the poverty line
So everything culminated when they cut the cord on life
A baby died. Its mother cries.

The burden gone in just one tiny moment in time.

A bigger burden forever living on in Mommy's mind.
