That Girl Poem by Mike Barrett

That Girl

I had a chance today,
A fleeting chance
To glimpse upon
That young girl's face.

I saw her eyes,
God! Her eyes!
Blue as a cloudless sky
And every bit as empty!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Have you ever looked at someone and realized the meaning of the expression, 'The lights were on, but nobody was at home'? This happened to me back in '68. I was working at Canadian Marconi at the time and on lunch hour, in line in the cafeteria, I chanced to glimpse upon a young girl's face. Later that day, when reflecting upon that moment, this poem arrived.

I've seen people like this, it's scary and very sad indeed.....
