Switching Channels Poem by Diana van den Berg

Switching Channels

Your soft television words
were mapped
in a mosaic
I could not read,
but the rivulet of your speech
and the dongas
etched in your rich brown face,
and the focus
in the tilt of your head
and the mother in your eyes
were your esperanza wings.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is about a woman talking an African language, that I didn’t understand, on a TV channel that I switched to for a few moments. Everything about her demeanour and voice made it appear that she was being very wise and kind and compassionate.
