Superpowers Of Cows Poem by Vonnie Postit

Superpowers Of Cows

oh man, do i love the rain.
MOO
have you smelt the grass today?
dear young boy with the
straight mouth and crooked teeth,
did your mother ever teach you
what love looked like?
mine did; she told me it looked like rainy days.
days when your daddy was too lazy
to come kill his battered meat.
days when we did not have to worry
who among us would be sent
to the freezer section of
the local Walmart.
I do not know what Walmart is;
do they have grass there too?
MOO (dead)
MOO (dead)
MOO (dead)
.

dear man with the
straight mouth and crooked teeth;
yesterday, the day i was given drugs that
almost made me forget my mama,
you were given your daddy's knife.
you chose my mama as its first victim.
i heard you were unlearned.
i heard you took your time.
i heard her scream made you laugh.
Moo…
Moo…
Moo…
.

i do not remember much from that day.
if you would have
chosen anyone else,
my mama would have hid me
from seeing
anything with sharp edges.
instead, sir, i witnessed everything.
.
.
.
MOO (no fear)
MOO (stand up)
MOO (actions are not without consequences)
.

do you hear that?
my sound (MOO)
is no longer a cry for
a peace treaty that will not come.
my sound (MOO)
is no longer a joke.
my sound (MOO)
is not a symbol of helplessness.
my sound is an emblem of power;
a demand for recognition and justice.
today is the first of many meatless
days for Walmart,
for TODAY
we make heroes out of victims
of cruelty.
.

dear dead man with the mouth
that remains in a straight line
with crooked teeth;
there are things you never knew about
us cows:
we have superpowers.

when it rains,
we harness godliness, and
understand our souls like
we understand the weather.
when you pump us with drugs,
our bodies morph, and our meat
becomes poison,
doing more harm to your people than us.
we allow this,
for you have been asking
for war for quite some time now.
when you torture one of us,
it was sent like a ripple throughout
our communities.
.
an elephant never forgets;
but a cow never forgives.
.
MOO (no fear)
MOO (stand up)
MOO (actions are not without consequences)
