Sorry... Poem by Alice Nguyen

Sorry...

I’m out on the street
And see an orphan child,
I walk away.

I’m out on the road
And see an old beggar,
I look the other way.

I read the news
And see poor people,
I turn the page.
“What a selfish girl! ” –
Is that what you’ll say
When you read to this phrase?

I’m not selfish,
I know me well.
I’m just afraid
Like almost everyone else.

I’m afraid of someday
I’ll become like them.
I’m afraid to look into their eyes
And feel guilty of myself.

Sorry for all the souls
That’d been cut so deep.
Sorry for all the hearts
That forever can’t be mended.

I’m saying sorry now
Because I can’t find a better chance.
I hope you’ll find the right path
That leads you to happiness, not pain!
