Sonnet For Serafina Poem by Michael Maxwell Steer

Sonnet For Serafina

Imagine! The girl in the picture with her kitty
has become the beautiful girl on the album cover.
The transformation from the little mimit to the witty
chanteuse hasn't been pain-free, and maybe isn't over -
yet what I so admire: you haven't shied
away from the darker areas of your soul,
but with elegant choice of song have tried
To relate the hidden parts to an envisioned whole.

The path of life and art is long. Who knows
What pitfalls lie in wait for those who choose
To live their life in public, and refuse
an ordinary veil of solitude:
finding and creating what is good
Out of the fickle whims of public mood.
