Snowy Morning Poem by L MILTON HANKINS

Snowy Morning

The first snow of the season has fallen silently
Blanketing the ground with a lovely white quilt,
Wafting here and there into gentle drifts
Shrouding all outdoors in an eerie silence.

The birds are silent on their barren limbs,
Feathers fluffed against the chilly breezes.
The chattering squirrels have all disappeared
Cuddling tightly into their fragile leafy nests.

Watchful deer forage in an adjoining meadow,
While yearlings frolic in newly discovered spectacle.
Feral cats confused by the unexpected change
Take cover ‘neath some lingering piles of brush.

A heavily clad youngster who lives across the way
Will soon come by with his long-handled shovel
To clean off my car and clear the driveway,
Traffic will resume; soon all will return to normal.
