Role Reversal Poem by Ray Hansell

Role Reversal

You were so warm and gentle
When I was a child
I know it was hard times
But you controlled my running wild

I grew up into a man
Who became very responsible
I followed all the rules
To make this life I live possible

When I was young and growing up
You took good care of me
I know if not for you
I wouldn't be the person I turned out to be

You taught me all the things
That go with living life
When it came to loving me
You never had to think twice

But now I see it's my time
To take care of you
Because when it come to our parents
That's just what children should do

It seems the rolls get reversed
Because now the parent is like a child
I know that I must care for you
In my mind that's long been reconciled

I will watch over you
The way you did for me
Because I know that when you're gone
I'll be left with great memories

Knowing that in the end
I was right there by your side
Doing what I was supposed to do
All the time doing it with pride
