Rise Above The Influence Poem by Matthew Campbell

Rise Above The Influence

Dig down when the hard times are upon you, So that every soul and body knew. That your morals fly high, And that no one can deny that you overcame that peer pressure and made a perilous sigh. That most would never attempt to even try, The way of cheating yourself to something better. To lie, Which in time makes them deny, makes them blind. And furthermore in a never loosening bind, For themselves they shall never find.

RISE ABOVE THE INFLUENCE

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I had a girlfriend that drank every other day. She was a very good athlete that was getting a full ride scholarship to the University of Oregon for Cross Country. She said she loved me and would do anything for me if I asked. So I asked her to stop drinking one night. She said okay but after a week she went out drinking.. She said it was peer pressure that made her do it. I broke up with her. A year later she was sitting in the emergency room after she had been in a car crash due to intoxication of alcohol. She was paralyzed from the waste down. Which ended her career of being a runner.5 years later after the accident she killed herself.
