Ridge Street Poem by Seamus O' Brian

Ridge Street

Rating: 4.2

A gust of wind catches a fragment of paper
chases it around a funnel of nothing
then skips away to tussle the last sunflower
petal of September, and a drive-way parked dog
hoists the heaviness of an afternoon eyelid
against the weight of cumulus bound sunlight
before it droops downward having caught
just a moment of the fractional shift of
the entire universe drilled down to the
buzz of a bee and the kiss of the breeze
and five seconds of my life on Ridge Street.

seamus, i like the concept of this poem, how you've turned what might be considered an ordinary moment into a poem, the capturing of a moment. and i like a funnel of nothing hoists the heaviness of an afternoon eyelid (i imagine an old bloodhound) ... before it droops downward the fractional shift of the entire universe i puzzle, however, over the phrase drilled down. everything else in the poem makes me feel i know the scene, know what you are describing. but drilled down? as in reduced to? i'd be interested in your response. overall, good stuff. glen kappy

Glen, thanks for reading! In response to your specific question, I attend meetings frequently during which someone presents a spreadsheet or data form and we are asked to drill down to the minutia of the item in question. I chose this term to contrast the vastness of the universe with the minutiae of the moment, the buzz of a bee, etc. It is not the most lyrically elegant term, but I wanted to incorporate the utilitarian sense of accounting or data entry in a poetic contretemps between the infinity of the universe and the finiteness of the ordinary detail of the fabric of life.

*If we take the time to see.* Isn't that always the challenge, Rebecca? Even as poets, we sometimes get so caught up in the machinations of living that we forget to see. And if we do not see, we begin to lose our gratitude for all of the beauty that surrounds us. Thank you, Rebecca, and blessings to you. :) S

Thank you, Tom, I am more than honoured. I will accept the credit of skilled observation over occupational distraction as a fine compliment. :)
