Remembrance Poem by Rustiq Joy

Remembrance

She wonders if she should come home.
She wonders if he'll be there waiting on her.
She wonders if this will be their last night together.
She wonders.…

She wonders if she should cook
His favourite meal, chicken soup.
'Who likes soup when there is Barbecue pork chops and French fried chicken to be had'.
She wonders …

Her mind wanders to that cool April spring morning,
Waist high in laundry.
He shouted, she shouted, one grunted and groaned
The glint of the knife shun from her hand
It was the first time she held it like that.

Her mind wanders to the night the lights went out.
The silence screamed, she screamed, he screamed
The blood congealed, she washed the knife,
Stood mesmerized by its sparkling silver.

She wonders was there ever a way out of this?
She wonders when did this journey begin?
She wonders did it begin when her anger grew
Into a mountain on her chest,
Or when her father first peeked at her tiny breasts?
She wonders...

She wanders aimlessly along the streets of Red Hills.
She wanders with the bloody knife still in her bloody hand.
She wonders about the dead man on her bedroom floor,
She wonders.…. I wonder.
