Reading Into It Poem by Mariam de Haan

Reading Into It

Aladdin had a genie.
Cinderella had a fairy.
When Beast became a prince
Then he could be with Beauty.
Plain Jane gets a makeover
To impress her date.
Barbie would faint
If she really was that weight.

As Anorexia rises
And Bulimia suffices
Media supplies us
Diet pills and excercises.

The people look in the mirror
And see such horror.
Believe the magazine cover
Is what they should honour.

It all began with Disney.
Then the models that we see.
They want us to change
Yes you, and me
Slowly mold us and create
A new 'perfect' kind of society.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
After watching Plain Jane and seeing how a perfectly beautiful girl was transfromed into 'stylish, confident' as well as other jazz they say after the makeover and reading that one of my internet pen pals has Anorexia. This poem was something that I really needed to write.
