Preamble: A Found Poem Poem by Frank Avon

Preamble: A Found Poem

The world of woods and water and fields -
and the sidewalks children use
to walk home from school -

are among our greatest teachers.

Perhaps it will not be my generation
that wrenches creation back from the brink;
perhaps it will be the next one.

But only if they know it,
love it,
were once loose and free
to wander in it.

Quoted, with slight adaptattions, from 'Preamble, ' by H. Emerson Blake, p1. Orion magazine, May/June 2105.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a captivating editorial - poetic in its very nature. These lines are adapted (very slightly, for the sake of terseness) from the last three sentences of the editorial. My only significant change was to insert the words 'to wander, ' which I took from an earlier paragraph in the piece. My gratitude to Emerson Blake and Orion for making my day. I, too, spent most of my youth wandering in the woods, on the hills, along the creeks, and around the fields of creation where I grew up in Tennessee. In my old age, I still relive those happy, free days and, if circumstances permitted, would retire there any day.
