Pottery Poem by Elizabeth Shield

Pottery

Gilded, glorious, standing tall
I quickly saw and then admired
A marble form in noble halls
Proportioned as we all aspired

Eyes as keen and kind and deep
Hands made firm and well and strong
Mind so quick and sharp as steel
Posture good and patience long

Standing proud on pedestal
Lightened by my loving gaze
There was pride before that fall
Expectations quickly razed

My god - revealed as made of clay,
Not just the feet - and hollow through
Shattered on the ground now lays
With him my heart in pieces too
