Peg Looney Poem by Francis Duggan

Peg Looney

Peg Looney to many was a role model
Of her paraplegic husband Den she took good care
She often pushed him to the shops in Millstreet
And pushed him home again on his wheelchair.

And when Den passed on back in the late fifties
She helped their daughters raise their families
She was a caring and kindhearted woman
And of her I hold such good memories.

I retain mental pictures of Peg Looney
Her gray hair combed up was tied in a bun
And she was admired and as well was respected
And in Claraghatlea was loved by everyone.

In her twilight years Peg Looney was forgetful
And her memory did not seem good at all
But her lovely smile to the end remained with her
Though familiar faces she could not recall.

People like her seem to live on forever
When they pass on good memories of them stay
I still fancy I see her clipping the hedgerow by her cottage
In the bright sunshine of a Summer's day.

Peg Looney to many was a role model
And good memories of her with us will remain
the World was better for her living in it
And Millstreet's loss was surely Heaven's gain.
