Pained Poem by Salvie Rosales

Pained

I have loved badly, loved the great
Too soon withdrawn my words too late
And eaten in an echoing hall
Alone and from a chipped plate
The words that I withdrew too late.
My apprehensions come in crowds
I dread the rustling of the grass
The very shadows of the clouds
Have power to shake me as they pass
I question things I do not find
One that will answer to my mind
And the entire world appears unkind.

No mask like open truth to cover lies
As to go naked it’s the best disguise.
Angry lovers tell and keep many lies from indeed
And know what they want but not what they need.
Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned
Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned
Spurn not the nobly-born, with love affected
Nor treat with virtuous scorn, the well connected.
After all, my erstwhile dear, my no longer cherished
Need we say it was no love just because it perished?
