On Callanan Poem by Francis Duggan

On Callanan

One of Ireland's best poets and it seems sad to say
That in Portugal his last remains ever lay
Yet his poems live on and are worthy of note
J J Callanan he was a marvellous poet
In his beautiful poems the poet lives again
The Convict of Clonmel, Gougane Barra and The Outlaw Of Lough Lene
The Author of these poems an extraordinary man
The translator and poet Jeremiah Joseph Callanan
The Callanans of this World to say the least rare
With the best poets of his era he could compare
Gougane Barra a poem that I loved as a boy
A poem for all ages to read and enjoy
In Portugal he will lay forever more
He died far away from his old Homeland shore
