Old Sliabh Luachra Poem by Francis Duggan

Old Sliabh Luachra

Far from the Cork and Kerry Border and the mountain Countryside
The poets and singers and musicians of Sliabh Luachra are known far and wide
Their legends live on though with Nature they lay
And they are remembered and talked of today.

Sliabh Luachra the home of the old Paps of Shrone
The great hills of bracken and heather and stone
Myth or legend has it that Goddess Anu's breasts in Shrone point towards the sky
And that she did give birth to the mountains nearby.

Cladoch Valley a place that is as old as time
A place that was old when Fionn was in his prime
A place of few houses and sparkling rills
That flow through the valley from the bracken hills.

In Cladoch 'tis said people live to be old
And an amazing story of it I've been told
That the clean water they drink and a life that's stress free
Must play a huge part in their longevity.

Cullen, Rathmore, Gneeveguilla and Knocknagree
Barraduff and Headford places with history
Their strong links to poetry and music and song one can trace
Old Sliabh Luachra remains as a cultural place.
