Old Hydraulic Diggings Poem by Clark Ashton Smith

Old Hydraulic Diggings

I

From the bedrock bottom
Dolomites upbear
Pines with roots that reach in air.

II

Roots of gnarled manzanitas
Tortuously coil,
Clutching the cobbled soil.

III

On the graveled slide
A log that ancient fires have charred
Lies, petrifled

IV

The reflex of stark rufous walls
Into milky waters green
Unfathomably falls.
