Of Ominous Shadows
It brought home to me
it takes a village
to raise a child
even in the bird kingdom
the cries of terror
from the fledglings
as they cowered before the onslaught
of the murderous crow
attracted instantaneous help
from other bird species
with flimflam, dive bombs and screeches
they repelled the hungry invader
sadly next day the nest was empty
as sparse as Christ's crown of thorns
the chicks are dead.
