Ode To The Unborn Poem by Chibueze Oscar Osuji

Ode To The Unborn

HAVE you seen babies cry? -a world they'll miss,
Alas! how they cheerish their unborn state;
Their cries, untarnish'd by motherly kiss,
Her breasts they'll suckle with rage for their hate;
Leaving the irregular womb and peace,
To face the eering world's crude happenings;
Where the tongue is keener than gory sword;
A world of pain and hate: For warring please,
Dear me, how they hurt the unborn's feelings;
Let the midwife sing her ''push'' bloody word!

Unborn in a peaceful place and away
In the womb, whence thy future is swollen,
And pregnant for all eyes to see it sway
In natality, thy peace is stolen,
The mortal world of fright hath done thee, theft;
Stolen thee from thy pride in thine womb's den,
You're welcome to a world of mortal's eer,
I hear you cry for the womb-world you'd left;
To this scornful world full with spiteful stern
A world where mortals live the devil's fear.

Unborn and safe in thy mortherly crest
Feeding on her internal nectarine,
Whilst she carries thine burden; thou art blest
All her merriment and loving is thine,
Loving thee; though in labour pain she wept,
If thou wilt stay in the womb forever,
How impossible! That purchase her harm
For ninth month shall siege the womb thou art kept
Ending thy miser reign in the womb, o'er
To bring thee forth to thine parentage arm.

Unborn you surely hide but cannot run
Thy kickings in the womb will let thee out
Midwife bring thee unhidden to the sun;
Out and out, you erupt thy pitching shout
We welcome thee to Adam's rib's mistake,
Little wonder when out, you make that cry;
Thou knowest our wrongful eden's error,
To our dusty earth you shall have your stake,
Thine royalty in the womb is gone-bye;
Thy cartilage heart'll know real life's terror.
