Dr Tapan Kumar Pradhan has translated Nuit de Neige of Maupassant beautifully as follows: - SNOWY EVENING The vast plain stretches white, frozen and silent: No sign of life, nor noise, nor sound; Yet sometimes we hear some shelterless hound Howling from the woods - a woeful lament. More songs in the air, more stubbles under feet But the winter has descended heavily to defy Tall trees, leaves shaven, that shoot into the sky, Their naked skeletons all spectre white. The full moon, now pale, seems to be in haste Shivering in the harsh terrains of the sky, And scans the earth with a mournful eye And hastens to leave us, it being desolate.
