Notice Of Woodpecker

Notice of Woodpecker
By: Sev Meyer

While sitting on an old stump
Midst the Pine and Oak near Potkin’s Bluff,
And in the deepest mode of contemplation,
My thoughts were pierced by the slow
Rat-a-tat-tat of a most rhythmic Woodpecker.

Holding in stillness, to better hear and see,
And shaking sawdust from my sleeves,
I slowly turned my head upward
Focusing on the giant sculptor of dead wood.

Black and white and red,
This crested, alert denizen of forest border and open land
Had nearly finished a perfectly rectangular, T V screen-like opening,
Where in weeks to come,
Tiny versions of him would begin their lives,
And show their little heads in the continuing saga
Of the Woodpecker Woodland Punch And Judy Show.
