.
Oh!
.
Well, never let it be said
that I don't learn something new
and stuff it in my head
every few minutes.
.
Today's second lesson?
Why, it's connected to the first.
You know the one,
Dinner will cook if you turn the burner on.
.
Not only that, whether you're looking
or not, it will continue cooking
and cooking and cooking.
and cooking and cooking.
.
When it is done
It does not shut itself off
which is not much fun
believe it or not.
.
Fortunately or unfortunately though,
it will get your attention
not by sending you a memo
but by setting off that shrieking smoke alarm.
.
Now I gotta start dinner all over again
but never fear
it won't be in vain
for I have learned today's lessons.
.
I am going to move a dining room chair
into the kitchen where I will sit
and not move so much as a hair
staring at dinner till it is ready.
.
I may often be over life's educating knee
but maybe that is why
they don't call me
a bright student for nothing.

Fortunately or unfortunately though, it will get your attention not by sending you a memo but by setting off that shrieking smoke alarm........so touching and impressive. This poem has a special attraction that brings me here for second reading. .

Cooking....reminds me of writing. Can't really tell you how much prose, how many poems, I've let stew to the point that the literary fire alarm has sounded, and sounded...and sounded. This is great poem, Susan. The humour is perfection.
Mj- - That comment is so wise. Beats the stuffing out of my wise-cracking little poem. Why don't you turn your comment into a poem so that all PH land can read it and enjoy as I am doing. seriously. You certainly got my pointy little ears all perked up with that observation! I give your comment a 10+++++++++++++
