I awoke last night
To the sound of crickets
And birds, which was strange
The kitchen faucet was dripping
And the cat pawed along the hall
I heard the baby sigh softly
And a car door shut
I turned towards you
You were still
Silent
In the dark I didn't see the blankets rise with your breath
I heard no air escape from your mouth
I heard no air brought in
I contemplated reaching my hand
To shake
Or stir
But only lay there
Waiting for a sign
Then there it was
A small breath
Between you and me
If you can keep a secret that is
I was disappointed
