Nation Building Poem by Divine Idiong

Nation Building

Swimming in the muddy struggle
Of academics;
The fire in our eyes
Consuming the
Many tattered books
In dust laden libraries
Across the land.

All the time our hearts
Pounding with hope.
Hope that we are
The leaders of tomorrow
We were told so
At the cradle.

So we bore it all
The stinking dormitories,
Hollow mosquito nets,
Pain and stress and malaria.
Learning to build a nation.

And at the climax
We flow
With the harsh current
On to the ocean of uncertainty,
Wide enough for every fish
To swim or get caught
In the jaws of our corrupt leaders.
