Nangeli Against Breast Tax Poem by Mohammad Muzzammil

Nangeli Against Breast Tax

In the realm of courage, a tale we find,
Of Nangeli, with a resolute mind.
A woman of strength, her spirit aflame,
Defying norms, she played her own game.

In Travancore's land, where injustice reigned,
Where taxes on women's bodies were ordained,
Nangeli stood tall, refusing to bow,
To an oppressive practice, she wouldn't allow.

With mulakkaram's weight upon her chest,
She chose rebellion, her heart unimpressed.
As the tax collector arrived at her door,
She took a stand, her spirit to soar.

Upon a leaf, the payment's usual place,
She offered a sight no one could erase.
Her own breasts, the price she did pay,
A sacrifice that echoed beyond that day.

Her act of defiance, a spark in the night,
Igniting a flame, illuminating the fight,
Against the chains of caste and suppression,
She symbolized freedom and its expression.

Her tale spread like wildfire, far and wide,
A beacon of hope, with strength personified.
The king took notice, the tax was repealed,
Nangeli's courage, a victory revealed.

In the land of Cherthala, her name did resound,
Mulalchi parambu, where her truth was found.
Nangeli, a symbol of resilience and might,
Her legacy shines, forever burning bright.

Through her life and deed, we're reminded anew,
To stand against oppression, to be brave and true.
Nangeli, an inspiration, her story we'll keep,
In our hearts, her flame of courage shall forever leap.
